Project and Programme Manager Coaching
Introduction
Project and Programme managers will often attend a training course in the relevant discipline and may then be considered fully developed by their organisation. The “qualifications” they take away from the course are normally knowledge based and may only cover some elements relating to the job they then have to do. Knowledge is of course essential but in a fast moving and pressured environment, an effective manager needs more than just knowledge.
Project/Programme coaching happens on a live project/programme.
Aim
To help the Project/Programme Manager effectively manage their project/programme as they move from “less developed” to “more developed” in terms of skills, knowledge and competencies required to do their job.
Content
A coaching assignment will be different for every coachee but will tend to follow these steps:
• A “Healthcheck” to establish the starting point for the required interventions
• Coaching programme designed
• Coaching programme delivered. Depending on the level of development of the individual this would graduate through 3 levels:
• Less developed – Tell/show the coachee how to …
• Developing – Work with the coachee on live project/programme tasks directly or indirectly
• More developed – Touch base as and when needed
• The coaching journey might last for just one or two meetings or it could develop over a year or more. The key criterion for this is the level of development at the start of the journey and the coaching goals agreed at that point.
• The individual can stop coaching at any point if they feel they have gained value from the coaching intervention.
